En effet, le canal de l\u2019Est a \u00e9t\u00e9 creus\u00e9 dans un fond de vall\u00e9e alluvial et dans une r\u00e9gion essentiellement calcaire. Le canal \u00ab consomme \u00bb beaucoup d\u2019eau et son alimentation estivale est parfois difficile. Les anciens canaux d\u2019irrigation ou de drainage sont donc devenus des canaux d\u2019amen\u00e9e ou de fuite des biefs (lors des crues) , nombreux dans cette section de la moyenne vall\u00e9e de la Moselle o\u00f9 la pente reste importante (une \u00e9cluse tous les deux kilom\u00e8tres en moyenne).
